Having a pool in your community is a wonderful asset for your members’ enjoyment and can also attract many prospective buyers. However, keeping it well maintained and safe for use is a high priority.

Establishing and publishing rules for using your pool and pool area is a great first step. Such rules may discuss such items as:

  • Hours of operation
  • Age restrictions to enter alone
  • Food and beverage consumption and the types of containers they come in
  • Activity restrictions, such as horseplay, running, diving, etc.

These rules should be provided to the membership as well as clearly posted at the pool area.

Safety equipment is also important to have readily available in the event of an accident. Some items to consider include:

  • Life preserver ring
  • Body hook
  • Dedicated 911 phone
  • First aid kit

A routine, at least daily, cleaning and inspection of your pool is also necessary. A brief list of items to be cleaned/inspected include:

  • Fencing
  • Skimmers
  • Filters
  • Tables, chairs, loungers, etc
  • Bathrooms
  • Trash receptacles

Each state and local municipality has some very specific requirements to the rules, safety equipment and cleaning for the pools in their respective jurisdiction. Please be sure to check those requirements for compliance.
